Teen Arrested After 145 MPH Police Chase on Indiana Interstate

An 18-year-old from Oswego has been arrested following a high-speed police pursuit in northwest Indiana that reached speeds of up to 145 miles per hour, according to Indiana State Police.

Authorities say the incident occurred on Sunday night at around 10:10 p.m., when a state trooper patrolling westbound Interstate 80 near Grant Street in Gary observed a black Audi approaching from behind at an extremely high rate of speed. Radar initially recorded the vehicle traveling at 91 mph in a 55-mph zone.

According to officials, the trooper attempted to follow the vehicle and clocked it at 93 mph before the driver accelerated rapidly to approximately 130 mph. When emergency lights were activated, the driver briefly slowed but then fled westbound, continuing to accelerate during the pursuit.

State police reported that at one point during the chase, the vehicle reached speeds of up to 145 mph while being pursued with emergency lights and sirens active. A second trooper was later able to position ahead of the fleeing vehicle, helping bring the situation under control.

The pursuit ended near Indianapolis Boulevard, where the driver ultimately stopped and was taken into custody without further incident. He was then transported to the Lake County Jail.

The suspect has been identified as Damian Arzabek, 18, of Oswego. He faces charges including resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, classified as a Level 6 felony, and reckless driving, a Class C misdemeanor, authorities said.

Indiana State Police have not released additional details regarding possible contributing factors in the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Officials emphasized the dangers of high-speed driving and fleeing from law enforcement, noting that such behavior poses serious risks not only to the driver but also to officers and other motorists on the roadway.
